ACP Project Report:

The project was intended for students to voice their opinions and allow KIOSC staff to get a broad range of feedback in order to improve their programs. While the program was short, there is potential for it to be expanded and made into more meaningful data.

In any trial or program there are shortcomings. The main shortcoming in this trial was making enough time to interview students. In all six testimonies were collected, however, a card failure resulted in the loss of two of those interviews. The four interviews that were collected were from students who attended a similar program. It is also worth noting that one of the lost interviews included a female student, which leaves the remaining data with only male participants.

Of the positive data collected, three of the four students responded positively towards the robotics component of the course. The remaining student enjoyed the virtual reality the best. All of the students came away having learnt a fact or other interesting information about Mars. None of the students had a solid answer to what they learnt the least about, with exception to one student who wanted more information on how they would fix problems on Mars in actual reality. All students expressed using robotics in future classes, mostly using Lego EV3 robots.

The feedback on making improvements included making robotics building more accelerated for advanced students (differentiation), having classes that last for 90 minutes, and creating a larger safety area for virtual reality.

It is worth noting that each of the students had continuity to their answers. For example, student 3 was very engaged in engineering throughout the entire interview.

If this program were to be continued in future I believe the following changes should be made:

-          Select a broad range of students including:

o   Students of all genders

o   High and low achieving students

-          Have a set of interview questions to be asked before the program to compare the changes and effect of the programs.

-          Revise questions, for example the questions asking students what they learnt least about, did not have a great response from any of the students.

This program, even with its shortcomings, was interesting and showed that students do have a voice, particularly insofar as they are engaged with something and that theme carries throughout their interview. With a greater pool of data and a revision of the questions this project could show some very interesting results.

Can you tell me about your favourite experience today and why?

Student 1:  my favourite experience was probably making the robots because it was cool how you could program them to do different things on mars

Student 2:  my favourite experience was probably the robots because you got to program them and make them

Student 3: My favourite experience was probably doing the engineer because I like engineering the robots to move around

Student 4: My favourite experience was probably the virtual reality, because I had an experience in how mars worked, and watching how to do it on earth.


What do you think you learnt the most about and why?

Student 1:   probably a couple of cool facts about mars, like temperature, the average temperature *interview interrupted*

Student 2: I learn the most about mars and the temperature, and how it is different to earth

Student 3: probably about mars, because it’s very different to earth.

Student 4: I learnt the most about like what people had to do on mars, like why did they have to fix it, and how did they have to fix it


How do you think the activity help you learn?

Student 1: The activities help me learn *interview interrupted*

Student 2: Well, before that I didn’t know anything about mars other than it was another planet

Student 3: no answer

Student 4:  the activity helped me learn by me actually walk through in virtual reality, and I could see what the real astronauts actually do


What do you think you learnt the least about and why

Student 1:  I think I learnt the least about, *shakes head unsure*

Student 2: *no answer*

Student 3: maybe about the drones, maybe.

Student 4:  probably more about like how to actually fix the technology they have on mars

What would you like to learn more about at KIOSC and why?

Student 1:  probably I would like to learn about, bit more about, like how we can, other things that can help us live, not just houses.

Student 2: Probably more about robotics cause I like that stuff

Student 3: The engineering because it is very fun, you get to use mathematics, and technologies and that kind of stuff

Student 4: probably wiring, like how to actually make robots


If you could improve anything today what would it be?

Student 1: How fluently we built our robot.

Student 2: no answer

Student 3: make the duration of the activities longer, probably 1 hour 30 maximum

Student 4: I would like to change, I guess more like area of virtual reality, I bumped into others and tripped over the wires.


What technologies would you like to experiment in future programs?

Student 1:  no answer

Student 2:  more about robotics and computer software, robotic stuff

Student 3: Maybe more of like the robots we used in the activity or the NXT, Mindstorms

Student 4: Probably robots


Would you consider a career in any of the activities you did today?

Student 1:  Probably, because it was pretty interesting.

Student 2: Yeah, because they were really interesting, I like them a lot.

Student 3: Yeah, because it was very interesting here, I might do a job like engineering as well.

Student 4: I don’t think so.
